Our 2018 Mountain Getaway | Walden Colorado

Taking a deep breath of the crisp mountain air, we stepped out of our tent.  As the sun began to brighten the landscape the chill of predawn gave way to the warmth of the morning. This is our Colorado!  And this is our 2018 mountain getaway!

If you have read our About Us page, you know that we love the mountains.  We cherish our time together no matter where we are.  But we know how important it is to step away from the hustle for a few days.  This trip was intended to be a scouting trip for Colin’s upcoming elk hunt but it ended up being a much needed recharge too.  It was so nice to take a break last week from life’s busyness to spend some time together soaking in the glory of God’s creation on the Colorado Mountains.

On our way up to the campsite, Wendy saw two moose in a meadow of the side of the road!  So, of course we stopped to watch them for a few minutes.  After we got out of the car, we realized there were actually three moose!  All of them were bulls and all of them in velvet.  “In velvet” means their antlers were covered in a “velvet” looking skin.  This skin  is shed and the bone is revealed in late summer or early fall before the rut (mating season).  Elk and deer go through this process as well.

As we made our way to the edge of the road overlooking the meadow, we spotted the third moose at the bottom of the roadside drinking from a stream.  He looked up at Wendy and stared at her for a few moments.  It was a little intimidating knowing this huge animal could easily navigate up the embankment in just a matter of seconds!  But, he casually put his head back down to the water and continued drinking.

Huntin’, Fishin’ And Lovin’ Every Day

Of course we brought our fishing poles!  Sadly, Wendy’s reel broke but she was happy to just relax on the shore while Colin fished.  We can’t help but sing a country song or two when we are out in the mountains. Luke Bryan’s song, “Huntin’, Fishin’, and Lovin’ Everyday” is so fitting!

A huntin’, fishin’, and lovin’ every day
That’s the prayer that a country boy prays
Thank God He made me this way
Huntin’ and fishin’ and lovin’ every day

Before too long Colin had one on the line.  Fresh caught rainbow trout for dinner? Yes please!

Beauty from the ashes

Elk love areas with grasses to eat, access to water and cover nearby.  Recent burn areas allow the sun to hit the forest floor.  This allows seeds to easily take root and grow into a buffet of grasses and wildflowers for elk and all kinds of mountain creatures.  The area we hiked experienced a fire in 2016.  Wendy was in absolute awe of the stark contrast between the black charred trees and the beauty that is literally coming from the ashes. What a perfect representation of God’s promises, power and glory!

After hiking for several hours and talking to a local Ranger, Colin was able to choose the areas he will revisit in just a few short weeks to hunt!  We are always incredibly grateful when Colin is able to take an animal.  And we are praying that he will be able to bring home his first elk from the Colorado mountains this year!
