If you have ever attended a pie competition at a local church you know it is serious business! And, if you have ever visited the about us section on our website, you know that Colin loves to bake. His mom taught him how, and he has many wonderful memories of being in the kitchen side-by-side with her. So, of course, when our church announced a pie contest Colin wanted to throw his hat in the ring and join in the fun!
We arrived with Colin’s beautiful apple pie in our favorite red, deep dish pie plate ready for some fierce competition. The church tables were covered with bright pink table cloths and lined with all kinds of pies, styrofoam plates, heart napkins and plasticware. Six judges were divided up into teams of two covering three categories; fruit pies, cream pies, and other. The “other” category consisted of everything from peanut butter pie to spaghetti pie! As the congregation went through the line and spent time enjoying fellowship with one another, the judges’ discerning palates were hard at work.
We made our way through the line talking with friends and carefully selecting which pies to try. After sampling a few of the delicious entries, Colin talked with some of the men and Wendy made her way around the room snapping photos. (We are not sure if people would recognize us without our cameras!)
Once the judges made their final decisions, the Intern Pastor stood up on a chair and gave a loud whistle to get everyone’s attention. He thanked everyone for coming and went right in to announcing the winners. “In the fruit category the winner is, number seven, Colin Hornback!” Colin won!!! A quick high five from Wendy, and he was on the way up through the cheering crowd to claim his prize. A gift card to a new restaurant in Fort Collins called Waltzing Kangaroo . . . date night! Yay!!!
We called Colin’s mom on the way home to share the good news. She has reason to be a proud mama!
